Optical brighteners are synthetic chemicals used to make your clothes appear brighter. When UV light strikes the brighteners, garments appear to glow.
Optical brighteners do not help make clothes clean. They are used by the big detergent companies to create the illusion of clean. They must not be very confident in the effectiveness of their product if they have to play tricks, huh?
What’s worse: optical brighteners are designed to stay with our clothes, so they can rub off on our skin when we wear them. For some people, they can cause a rash-like reaction that looks and feels like sunburn, especially if a skin condition (like general sensitivity) is present.
These chemicals don’t dissolve in our wastewater, so they invariably make their way to our rivers, lakes and stream where they contaminate fish. Some studies show that long-term exposure or consumption to optical brighteners can cause hormone disruption, especially in developing bodies (children).
We like living healthy and actually getting things clean, that’s why we stick to effective solutions and skip the chemicals.
