Laundry is a chore, but it has to be done. Most of us don’t enjoy washing load after load, but there’s no avoiding it. We can, however, speed up the process. Here are some tips for fast laundry.
1. Never sort laundry again
Use a three hamper system to separate clothes when you take them off so you never have to sort through a pile. One hamper is for colors, another for whites, and a third for delicates. If you’re not a family with a lot of delicate items, you can stick with two hampers. When it’s time to do the wash, just dump the hamper contents straight into the washer.
If you find yourself doing one type of wash more often, have everyone just drop their items (usually colors) right into the washer tub. Whoever adds the last time starts the machine.
2. Wash your items less often
The simplest way to do less laundry is to not do it!
Many of your items can withstand a few wears without needing washing, especially if you don’t do anything active in them. A hoodie can be worn multiple times (providing you don’t wear it in a lot of weather). An over shirt can be worn at least twice if you wear something underneath it. Jeans can be worn multiple times with washing (some people don’t wash them at all).
3. Quit chasing socks
Socks get lost. It happens. Often they aren’t caught in the dryer, but sneak around the edge of the washer tub. You can solve sock-loss in a couple ways. 1) Just stop worrying about. Buy a lot of similar socks so even if you lose one, you’ll still have a match. 2.) Stick your socks in a mesh garment bag so they can’t disappear one at a time.
4. Unload the dryer fast
If you don’t have a basket nearby, here’s a trick to unload your dryer quickly: Grab a towel from within. Lay the towel over the top of the pile like a blanket. Rotate the dryer barrel so the towel is now beneath the pile of clothing. Grab two corners with one hand and two corners with another and lift it all together like a hammock. No more trail of clothing down the hallway!
5. Clean your washer and dryer
Ever wash something and feel it just isn’t right? Your washer or dryer might be dirty. Clean your washer every few months to get rid of built of soap gunk and any dirt that came off your clothes. Here’s a simple guide of steps to clean your washer. You should also wipe the inside of your dryer regularly and clean the moisture sensor.
Now that you've got your laundry routine down to a science, meet your new favorite laundry detergent.
