Get excited DIY buffs and eco-friendly friends! We’re cleaning the bathroom from top to bottom without any harsh chemicals. Here are some of our favorite natural alternatives for tackling the crud in the bathroom on the cheap.
Grapefruit and Salt – The Tub Grime Assassin
The sweet aroma of citrusy grapefruits beats the stench of bleach any day. Au-naturale grapefruits straight from your refrigerator release a potent fragrance you’d only expect from harsh store brought candles and cleaning products. By substituting your sponge or steel-wool for a grapefruit wedge doused in coarse salt, you can eliminate some of the toughest of bathroom grime.
Steps & Ingredients
- Wet your bathroom surfaces with water.
- Sprinkle with salt and scrub.
Cut grapefruit in half - Coat the inside of the grapefruit with a thick layer of coarse salt
- Use the grapefruit wedge to scrub surfaces
- Rinse
Baking Soda & Vinegar – The Toilet Crud Annihilator
If we can brush our teeth with baking soda, you can bet your bottom dollar we can clean our bathrooms with it too. This everyday combination is a grade-A toilet muck buster! The foaming combination of baking soda and vinegar naturally loosens up dirt on surfaces, leaving them sparkling clean. Add in your favorite essential oil to this mixture for a pleasant fragrance and you’ve got yourself and an eco-friendly alternative to toilet cleaner
Steps & Ingredients
- In a spray bottle combine:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 50 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)
- Spray surfaces and clean they way you would apply store brought bowl cleaner
If you prefer a simpler (but just as effective) toilet cleaner, sprinkle some Rockin’ Green into the bowl, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub with your toilet brush. The grim will fall away easily.
Baking Soda, Vinegar & Salt – Drain Muddle Buster
The dynamic duo of baking soda and vinegar doesn’t just stop at toilet build-up. Combined with salt the two ingredients double as a drain cleaner. That’s right; together these harmless everyday products can cut through grease and break down build up in your drain without the lye and aluminums found in the store brought drain cleaners.
Steps & Ingredients
- Begin by pouring a large pot of boiled water down your pipes
- Follow with about a half a cup of baking soda mixed with 1 cup of salt
- Allow baking soda salt mix to sit for about 10 minutes
- Pour a combination of 1 cup of hot boiling and 1 cup of vinegar
- Flush with warm water after 10 minutes
Vinegar Water & Cornstarch – The Mirror Sparkler
Glass is tough. But this organic combination of vinegar, water and cornstarch can give you that streak-free shine without the ammonia, bleach or phosphates found in commercial glass cleaners. The only thing worse than toothpaste stains on the bathroom mirror is inhaling toxins to get them out. This is my favorite combo for tackling glass glare with things I already have in my kitchen
Steps & Ingredients
- In a Spray bottle combine:
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
- 2 cups warm water
- Spray and clean they way you would apply store brought glass cleaner
Tea tree Oil & Water – Toxin Free Disinfectant Spray
We are conditioned to need to “smell” or “feel” a product working. With tea tree oil we still get the subtle satisfaction of latent fragrance with tons of other benefits. Tea tree oil is something I keep around my house because not only is it good for the body, it’s packed with antibacterial benefits I can use to clean my home. Unlike store brought disinfectant sprays this formula skips the benzalkonium chloride and naturally destroys surface germs.
Ingredients:
- In a Spray bottle combine:
- 50 to 100 drops of tea tree oil
- 10 oz. of water
- Apply generously to surfaces
- Wipe down with either a cloth or paper towel
