How to Wash a Jiu Jitsu Kimono
Everyone who practices Jiu Jitsu loves their Kimonos, but no one would want to roll with a person who never washes their own Kimono. We have a few tips that will ensure you’re not that person. It's ideal to wash your Jiu Jitsu Kimono after each training session, and for everyone's sake, you should after every practice session that you get a heavy sweat going. Your Kimono will last a lot longer, and you’ll save money in the process if you use our cleaning techniques and products.
Pre Soak It: To fully clean your Jiu Jitsu Kimono, you will usually have to do a pre-wash cycle to start things off. Just toss all of your Jiu Jitsu gear into the wash and go ahead and run a quick cycle with a tablespoon of our Rockin’ Green Funk Rock Ammonia Bouncer, or sometimes use a couple more tablespoons if you’re needing some deeper cleaning power. This’ll start getting rid of the stinky sweat build up.
Use a Chemical Free Detergent: Wash with a detergent that has no chemicals like Rockin' Green so chemicals won’t interact with the colors and fabric of your Kimono. If you use a natural detergent, it will still clean well and be healthier for both your Kimono and you.
Wash It With Cold Water: Wash with cold water to keep your Jiu Jitsu Kimono from being damaged. This also helps avoid shrinkage over time.
Never Use Bleach on It: Bleach can ruin the materials that your Kimono is made of.
Wash It Inside Out: It’s good when you wash a Jiu Jitsu Kimono to not throw in other clothes that could rub against the fabric of your valuable gear. Your Kimono will stay looking better than anyone else’s for longer!
Hang It to Dry Quickly: If your Kimono sits in the washer, it’ll get more and more wrinkled. Hang yours up to dry as fast as you can, and you shouldn’t have any issues not ironing. Ironing is still an option but there’s really no need for regular use.
Don’t Use a Tumble Dryer if Possible: This is the easiest way to shrink your Kimono too much. The cotton fabric will absorb a lot of water when it’s in the washer, and if it drys out too fast, the cotton fibers will constrict together causing the whole Kimono to shrink and even warp. If your only option is to use a dryer, use the most delicate setting.
Do It Again: If your Jiu Jitsu Kimono still has a funky smell after these steps, feel free to go through everything another time!
