7 End of Summer Clean Up Tips

I know the winter is still a ways away for many people, but autumn will be upon us before we realize it. Soon we’ll be trading afternoons romping around the park for quiet days inside.

Before it gets cool, here are some cleaning tips you have to take advantage of.

1. Scrape off that grill

Before you pack it away or wrap it up, make sure to scrape off all the gunk. If you aren’t winter grillers and it sits there are year, it might never come off. You can use oven cleaner if you have to, but I’m not a fan of that chemical stuff – just a bit of Rockin’ Green and elbow grease.

2. Clean your washing machine

During the summer, we tend to sweat more and get our clothes dirtier. You might notice your machine stinking a bit around this time of year. Run an empty load on the hottest setting with a good amount of detergent to wash it out, then leave it open for a few hours to dry.

3. Clean any pool toys

Those plastic pool toys need a good cleaning even though they spent most of their time in the water. Since kids do most of the playing with them, I’d stick to a natural cleaner (hey, Rockin’ Green!) rather than something with chemicals.

4. Have a yard sale

Technically we’re past yard sale season, but sometimes that means you aren’t competing with other sellers and can draw a crowd. The best way to clear out the clutter is to keep it at bay with regular purging. Sell off the stuff you don’t need.

5. Clean that garage bay

If you have a garage, you know how tough it can be to keep space open for your car. There’s always something you picked up, or something you’re storing for someone, or some project you’ll get to one of these days… But you’ll be grateful come chilly winter days when you can pull right into your home and avoid the wind.

6. Cover your patio furniture

If you’re done sitting on your porch this year, I recommend wrapping up, folding, or stowing your patio furniture some place safe, especially if it snows in your area. Realistically, you probably won’t use it in the cold, but it can be damaged by the elements.

7. Organize for the season

If you’re like most people, you have an attic or garage with stuff. Instead of hunting around each time you need something, make a quick list of everything you may need for the upcoming season and pull it out all at once, while swapping in the stuff you don’t need. For example: swim toys in and canoe go in, Halloween decorations and skis come out.
