6 Tips to Keep Your Carpet Looking New

If you’re like most families, you have a few carpeted rooms in your home – usually the bedrooms and a living room. Carpet makes your home more comfortable, but it can also be a hassle some times. Here are some tips to keeping your carpet looking new.

1. Use runners and area rugs in high traffic areas

You can protect the floors and carpets in your home by throwing down a simple area rug in the places where the most damage occurs. High traffic areas usually include hallways (between bedrooms and stairs or bathrooms), in front of doors that lead outside, and in front of couches. Of course every house is different so you’ll have to decide what’s best for your home.

2. Vacuum regularly, even if you don’t think you need it

Even if you banish shoes past the entryway and police people from eating over the carpet, dirt and small fibers will still find their way into the carpet. When we walk over the carpet, the foreign particles are ground in and wear against the carpet’s fibers, damaging it. By vacuuming often, you’ll remove these substances and keep it looking fresh.

3. Don’t pull out the snags

Every so often you’ll find a tuft of carpet fiber sticking up above the rest. This will leave you with a bare spot that isn’t noticeable by itself, but over time can give your carpet a spotted look. Use scissors to cut it off even with the carpet.

4. Treat stains right away

It’s inevitable that you’re going to spill something on your carpet. Blot up the liquid with a towel as quickly as you can. Do not rub it in; you’ll just make it harder to remove. Mix a couple tablespoons of Rockin’ Green Active Wear Detergent with water in a spray bottle, shake well, and apply to the stain. Continue to blot until the stain is removed. Some liquids might require some specialty techniques.

5. Steam clean the carpet regularly

Our carpets need a good washing every now and then like everything else. If you don’t own a steam cleaner, many hardware stores will rent you one for the day, but they’ve come down in price over the last few years. If you have a lot of traffic in your home (or kids), it might be worth picking one up. Instead of adding chemical cleaning agents, use a few tablespoons of Rockin’ Green and a gallon of water. Always vacuum first before washing.

6. Remove dents with moisture and heat

If you move your furniture around, you’ll notice some compressed spots. Usually these pop up on their own over time, but if you want to get rid of them quickly, use moisture and heat. Rub a damp cloth over the spot and spray it with a hair dryer for a few minutes and the fibers will realign themselves.
