Your little baby has grown up and is now ready to head off to preschool! For a parent this can be both exciting and scary. With so many options out there for preschools, it can be hard deciding which one is the best and safest for your child. Here are six tips to choosing the right preschool for your child:
1. Start your Search Early
If your child is to start preschool in January, start your search in September. This gives you plenty of time to check out different schools and be able to really compare them all. You don’t want to rush yourself into a decision because you need childcare.
2. Get Referrals
Chances are that you have a few friends who already have children in preschool or that were in preschool. Ask them where their kids went and how they liked it there. The more friends you ask, the more data you’ll have to make your decision. Check for online reviews, as well.
3. Ask Questions
If there were any time that you shouldn’t feel like asking too many questions is annoying, it’s now. For most, this is the first time your child is going to be under someone else’s care, so it’s important that you ask any questions you have. Make sure to ask about potty training, nap times, age qualifications, how they structure their days, and how they deal with tantrums.
4. Figure Out What is Most Important
When choosing the right school for your child, you are going to have a long list of what you are looking for. Take a good look at that list and decide which three things are most important to you. This will make it easy to rule out schools and put certain schools at the top of your list that cover all of your top three needs.
5. Make a List
Once you have visited all of the schools in your area, make a list. List all of the schools that are possible yes’s and write down your pros and cons for each. Keep in mind your top three must haves and cross out any schools that don’t fit the bill. Being able to see the positives and negatives of each school on paper will make it easier for you to choose.
6. Visit the School Twice
You can’t make a decision by going to the preschool only one time. You should do an initial visit by yourself to ask questions and get a feel of the school and then go again with your child to see how they like it there. If you can, stop by when they aren’t expecting you so you can catch the school off guard, outside of a scheduled meeting (but don’t sneak around the school like a spy, that will get you in trouble).
