8 Ways to Name Your Baby

Posted by Bill DAlessandro on

Naming your child can be difficult. You want to give them something original that other people will remember, but you do not want choose something so different that other children will use it to tease your child. Still, choosing a name should be fun.

One of the biggest complaints adults make about their name is that it’s identical or similar to many other kids they grew up around. If you want to give your child a unique name, you have to look in new, interesting places. Use these tips to find the perfect name for your baby.

1. Look at your family tree.

You very well may find some truly unique and interesting names among your own family. This might even make the name more meaningful.

2. Pick a popular name from a long time ago.

Look up the most popular names of people twenty, fifty, or one hundred years ago. This will make your child really stand out.

3. Consider the landmarks around you.

Where did you meet your spouse? Does that restaurant, street, or town have an interesting name?

4. Use an online guide.

Use a baby naming website that puts everything right in front of you, like Belly Ballot. You can sort through thousands of names based on time periods, origins, and regions.

5. Make it into a game.

Vow to learn the names of three new people every day and ask their names. Collect your favorites on a list to choose from. This will help you learn names outside of your social circles.

6. Go international.

If you’re bored of the all the names in your home country, look at the popular names in other countries. If you choose a name that’s different, but not too exotic, you could help your child stand out without making them a target for teasing.

7. Consider your hobbies.

What sorts of things make you happy? You could associate your child with your favorite activities for real meaning. For example, if you enjoy bird watching, you could name your child “Robin” or “Dove.”

8. Look to nature.

Nature-themed names are becoming more popular these days, like “Sky” or “River.” What do you find beautiful about nature? Could that be a name?
