4 Tips on Keeping Your Pet Safe and Cool in the Summer

Posted by Kim Giraldo on

how to keep pets cool in the summerPets can be the final touch on a happy and balanced family. Dogs, parrots, fish or hamsters can bring so much joy to a family and it is important to make sure that they are well taken care of, especially in the summer. Your animals can’t communicate with you very well (although some sure seem like it!), so you have to look extra closely for signs of discomfort, pain or suffering. One of the reasons I insist all my cleaning products be made safe for animals is because I value their role in our lives. Here are some tips on keeping your pets safe and cool throughout the summer.

1. Keep House Pets in Cool Areas

It is best to keep animals in well-ventilated areas that are out of direct sunlight. If you have fish, try not to place them by the window. If you have cats or other animals that roam freely, make sure they have access to a room with a fan or air conditioning.

2. Cold Water

Pets need to be as hydrated as we are. To prevent dehydration, a supply of water big enough for each pet needs to be placed in a shaded area, especially if pets are kept outside. Don’t forget to account for evaporation if you are going to be gone for a long time. Throw in a few ice cubes if you want to give your pet even more refreshing drink.

3. Grooming

Make sure to give your pet several good brushes at the beginning of the summer. Winter coats that have yet to shed or matted fur can be major sources of trapped heat. And the longer the hair the more likely your pet will be to overheat. If you have a particularly shaggy animal, it’s worth the expense to have a groomer shave him or her down at the start of the seasons. It is important to groom your animal regularly, but the extra attention you give to your animal’s coats in the summer can make a big difference.

4. Know Your Pets Cool Spots

Every animal has a different way to cool themselves down. For example, dogs pant to cool down, but they also lose heat from their paws and ears. Take a wet cloth to these areas or pour water on these sections to give them immediate relief from the heat. You can even buy a plastic baby pool just for pets and keep it in the shade so your animals can take a dip whenever they get hot.
