Teamwork: How Kids Benefit from Playing Team Sports

Besides making a ton of friends, there are also a lot of other benefits for kids being on a team sport. Next time your child asks if they can join the soccer or baseball team, say yes. Here’s how kids can benefit from playing team sports:

How to get along with others

A lot of times school is the first place where your child has to learn to get along with others. School is a pretty formal place, so a sports team is a great place for them to learn how to get along with others in less formal social situations. Sports teams are big on “we” not “I,” so kids do not have the choice of picking and choosing who they want to hang out with; they have to hang with everyone. Team sports also teach children how to overlook an annoying teammate or a bad attitude. They also encourage friendship and empathy for fellow teammates.

Teaches respect

One of the first things a coach is going to tell his players is that you have to respect your teammates. Being on a team means that you are going to be spending a lot of time with these people, and you are going to have to respect them no matter what. Imagine a team that cannot get along and is disrespectful to each other? That sounds like a team that is not going to win. Actually, it doesn’t sound much like a team at all. That’s because the core center of most teams is respect, and respect is a great thing to learn.

Losing is okay

Another great thing that is beneficial about sports is that is teaches kids how to lose. Their team is not going to always win, they will lose some games. This is a great lesson to be learned for life. You cannot and will not always get what you want or come out on top. The important thing is to always try your hardest, and respect those you are working with and against.

Boosts self-esteem

Sports can help kids to learn their strengths and weaknesses. Knowing what your strengths are will help your child to feel more confident. In addition, kids involved in athletics tend to be natural leaders and learning leadership skills at a young age will be a big boost someday in the corporate world.

It’s healthy

It is so important that your child learns how to be healthy at a young age. Signing them up for a sports team is a great start. This will teach them to exercise! It will also keep them fit, healthy and having fun!
